Being a Cub Scout

In Cub Scouting you'll have lots of fun, adventure, and activities with your den and pack. But there's more to it than that. Being a Cub Scout means you are a member of a worldwide youth movement that stands for certain values and beliefs. Cub Scouting is more than something to do. It's all about who you are and the person you will become.

What Is Cub Scouting?

If you are in kindergarten through fifth grade—or you're 5 to 10 years old—then Cub Scouting is for you. It's for your family, too. This is the first and the biggest of the three Scouting programs (Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, and Venturing) from the Boy Scouts of America.

Cub Scouts Belong to a Pack and Den

Every Cub Scout is a member of a Cub Scout pack. A pack is a large group of boys. We are Pack 382, and we meet on the third Thursday of the month at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Arnold, Maryland.

The pack is divided into smaller groups called Dens. Each Den has about six to eight Scouts. All of the Cub Scouts in a den are about the same age and school grade.

Cub Scouts Earn Awards

While you're having fun, you'll also be earning badges and awards. You'll work on projects with your parents or other adults in your family, and all of you will feel good about the things you accomplish. When you have earned a badge, you and an adult member of your family take part in a ceremony. The badge is given to the adult, and he or she then gives it to you in front of the whole pack. This is a way of saying "thank you" to your family for their help in earning your award.

The most popular awards for Cub Scouts are the advancement awards. Boys do requirements to advance and earn their badges of rank: Lion, Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos, and the Arrow of Light Award. The Arrow of Light is the highest award in Cub Scouting. Webelos Scouts also earn activity badges.

New Scout FAQ

1. How much does it cost to join?

The cost for one year is $70 plus the cost of a uniform. The scouting membership is based on the calendar year, so when you join mid-year (anytime after December) you will be offered a prorated rate for the current year. When joining in the Fall, your registration will include the dues for the next year, so it will be a little higher than the $70. We also offer a limited number of scholarships for those who need financial assistance.

Fees include:

Annual BSA registration

Advancement badge each year

Boys Life subscription

2. What are the age ranges and structure of the Pack?

Cub Scouts is for children K through 5th grade. The Pack is broken up into Dens of 5 to 10 scouts with one leader per den. We have approximately 30-50 scouts a year and 5-6 Dens in the Pack.

3. How often do you meet?

We usually meet once a month as a Pack and then once to twice a month as a Den. Optional Den and Pack activities are also scheduled throughout the year.

4. Where do you meet?

We meet mainly at Asbury Methodist Church in Arnold, Maryland. Activities take place in a variety of places depending on the outing.

We are currently conducting Pack meetings outdoors and socially distanced and as state restrictions permit, do allow Den meetings to occur in person.

5. What sort of activities do you do?

Many of our activities are driven by the Cub Scout Handbook and include age-appropriate, skill-building activities that progress as your boy completes his achievements.

Activities we’ve done in the past include:

USS Constellation Overnight

Fall Pack Camp-out

Space Derby

Timberline Pack Ski Trip

Port Discovery Overnight

Food Drive

Winter Yurt Camping

Pinewood Derby

Terrapin Adventures

Spring Pack Camp-out

Rain Gutter Regatta

6. What are my responsibilities as a Pack Parent?

Our Pack is entirely volunteer-run. We depend on our parents to attend Pack and Den functions, work with our Scouts to complete achievements, help organize events, and to fill leadership positions. We welcome your active participation!
